EMI has spent the last few months on sabbatical having earned time off for good behavior. While some may argue that time was not spent wisely, we at EMI World Headquarters were not just sitting on the couch eating bon bons. First, I was fortunate enough to travel to Edinburgh to attend Russell Napier’s course, “Practical History of Financial Markets” at Herriot-Watt University. There I learned why markets go up and why they go down. Sadly, I missed the part about where they go from now. However, I heartily recommend the course to anyone interested in financial markets.

After that bit of education I took the family to Alaska for the summer on our sailboat. We sailed 4,000 miles in three months, including two crossings of the feared Gulf of Alaska, and enjoyed the company of whimsical wheezing whales, burly bone-crushing bears and paranoid passionate puffins. For those who are interested, you can read about our adventure with photos here.
