“Is that your grandma’s coat?”  – “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore

Our newly adopted hometown of Seattle seems to be dominating global headlines recently. Local football team, the Seattle Seahawks won their first Super Bowl ever against the favored Denver Broncos – despite it ostensibly being the Year of the Horse. One can’t go anywhere in town, whether it is the gym, a shop or a restaurant without someone shouting out as you leave “Go HAWKS!” This has become the new local send off. Similarly, the rap group “Macklemore” swept the recent Grammy Awards, the music industry’s self-congratulatory, back-slapping version of Hollywood’s nauseating Oscars. Macklemore, a duo of two young white dudes from here who “rap,” won four Grammy awards including Best New Artist. Unbelievably, the video of their song “Thrift Shop” has half a BILLION hits on YouTube (two of those are me).
